The Buddha From Babylon... (Book Review)

UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 18, 2014

What if I told you that Siddhartha Gautama was an astronomer, a mathematician, a ruler of Babylon’s Magi….a man who walked the various stages of life who attained enlightenment while sitting under a Bodhi Tree gazing at the stars? What if I told you that…History…wrote HisStory…all wrong.

Buddhism is one of the oldest religious practices dating as far back as 6th Century BC ….This religious practice came to be because of one man… Siddhartha Gautama. Although there are many stories and many myths associated with Buddhism…the one story that almost every sector of Buddhism seems to agree with... is the story of Siddhartha Gautama known to many as Shakyamuni Buddha.

“The Buddha from Babylon: The Lost History and Cosmic Vision of Siddhartha Gautama” by Author and Spiritual Archeologist Harvey Kraft, takes us on a spiritual… and historical journey… back to the birth of Siddhartha Gautama…back to the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha… back to the birth of Buddhism.

However… Harvey Kraft, a student of Buddhism for over 45 years, just doesn’t take us on any ordinary journey; the author takes beyond the limitation of history by unearthing the lost spiritual archeology and history that tells the story of not only of the philosophy of Buddhism… but the philosophy of Religion. Buddhism in essence is not just one Religion, its many Religions made up of many different cultures and beliefs.

Buddhism is a philosophy of peace, happiness and self awareness “From this consciousness of a greater sphere of existence emerged religions, gods, and cosmologies connecting human beings with natural phenomena, circumstances and events, exotic dimensions, divine beings, and other powerful forces.” (The Buddha from Babylon)

The author’s meticulously researched drawn on scientific facts has resulted in this 528 page biography that includes a glossary with information related to key terms, Doctrines, Sacred and Historical Figures relevant to Buddhism. This book by no means is a quick read, however it captures your attention, and you are immediately invested IN the quest for the truth, just as Siddhartha Gautama thousands of years ago. Think of this book as water…water can appear as a liquid, solid, and gas and in each form the true essence is still water….never losing its real value. The true essence of this book is not Buddhism; the true essence is spirituality, a spirituality in which Siddhartha Gautama with his enlightenment and teachings gave birth to the revolution of peace that we now know as Buddhism. This book is written for everyone who's on a spiritual journey...and most of us are...and regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs this book is for you.

Harvey Kraft has done an excellent job navigating us to through the unknown….unearthing the secrets necessary for us to discover where the philosophy of Buddhism began, enabling us to continue our spiritual path to enlightenment….regardless of our religious beliefs.

Secrets… and answers to questions that will spark a desire within us….Questions like…

Did Siddhartha Gautama grow up in isolation before he became enlightened, or could he have been a highly educated man versed in religious symbolism, astronomy, mathematics/sacred geometry, and philosophy? Why did civilization begin with religion at its center? When where Gods and Spirits first discovered? Why was the original Buddhism taught by the Buddha dedicated to peace? And What was the Perfect Enlightenment achieved by the Buddha?

The Buddha from Babylon: The Lost History and Cosmic Vision of Siddhartha Gautama is a must have, and I highly recommend it, this should be on the book shelf of every Buddhist and Non-Buddhist. “From the grand perch of the Universal-Mind, humankind has been able to tap into a boundless Universe. What have we discovered there? Is it god, nature, or some reality as yet inconceivable? Will people succeed in finding the ultimate Truth of the Universal Mind? (...)The moment they asked these question, the conversation started. ..”(The Buddha from Babylon)
