Chanel...Coco Chanel

I think it’s pretty much safe to say that the majority of the world knows the name Coco Chanel.

What the majority of the world doesn’t know… is Coco Chanel’s story.

So who is Coco Chanel? How did Coco Chanel become a household name synonymous with high fashion, luxury, and sophistication?

All those questions and much more are answered by author Rhonda K. Garlick. The author  brings the extraordinary life and journey of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to life in her book “Mademoiselle Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History.

Like pages from Coco Chanel’s diary we watch as she evolves from a child born into poverty, a little girl abandoned at a convent by her father, a young woman singing her way through life as a cabaret singer, a seamstress, a spa attendant, a hat maker, a designer…and finally…a woman who became an icon with the launch of her Couture Fashion and her Chanel No 5 Perfume.

However, Coco Chanel’s life is not without controversary, her survival instinct often lead her to ill-fated relationships… as a companion for rich playboys. After all it is easier to cry in a palace, then cry in a poor house, “she came to regard love as a zero-sum game.”

“Life could be unforgiving for poor young women in fin de siècle France. Girls like the Chanel foursome-pretty and charming but lacking dowries or family connections –courted disasters in their dealing with men.”

However, there is more to Coco Chanel’s life than who she undressed for, Coco Chanel became an icon for who she dressed. Her ill-fated relationships were just part of her life but it did not define her as a woman. Coco Chanel was… in my opinion…a personification of courage. Life gave Coco Chanel lemons and instead of making lemonade…she made Chanel No5 and left the world wondering how she did it.

Coco Chanel may have been poor as a child, uneducated as a young adult, but as a woman Coco Chanel decided to be the author of the only book that defines her and reinvented her past and herself a million times over, making her a multi millionaire and her company the highest earning privately owned company in the world. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel made a name for herself...and that name is Coco Chanel…Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. I highly recommend this book to all those who love any and everything Chanel…and for those who are simply curious about the life of Coco Chanel.
